Termites are one of the most dangerous infestations you will ever have to deal with. They can quite literally eat you out of house and home. Termites can single-handedly compromise the foundation of the home and cause thousands in damage in a very short amount of time.

When you identify a termite infestation, it’s important that you take action immediately! The longer you wait, the more damage they will do to your most valued possession. Follow these tips to help get the problem under control.

Find the Infestation

You might not see a direct sign of the infestation but that doesn’t mean that it’s not there. Sagging floors and holes in the woodwork are all signs that your home is infested. If you can actually see direct signs or see the termites, then the infestation is severe and you should probably seek professional help immediately.

Set up a Cardboard Trap

Take a couple of strips of cardboard and wet it. Stack them on each other where you feel that the termites are most likely to be. Termites feed on cardboard so this will lure them. Once the cardboard gets infested, you can remove and burn it. This trap will not solve all of your problems but it’s a good way to get rid of thousands of termites, reducing damage while you wait for help.

Expose Termites to Sunlight

Termites will die if they are exposed to sunlight. If the infestation is furniture or something else that can be moved, then you can remove it from your home. Place it in direct sunlight to help drive away the termites. It takes 2-3 days for sunlight to effectively eradicate termites.

Boric Acid is an Effective Killer

This is one of the most effective methods of getting rid of termites. It’s the best store-bought insecticide that you can find. There are a few ways that you can distribute insecticides.

  • Use bait stations to kill termites.
  • Coat infected areas with boric acid.
  • Plant bait that contains boric acid in your yard (near the home) or directly within the infestation.
  • Replenish stations regularly.

Other Termite Control Products

Purchase and use other products to control termite infestations. These are readily available at the local hardware store. This is one of the first steps that you should take to help lessen the infestation. Bait stations and liquid termite control products are both highly recommended.

Seek Professional Help

It’s nearly impossible for homeowners to get rid of their termite infestation on their own. If you follow through with all of the methods listed in this blog post, you will be able to get your problem under control. But professionals have the best chance of eradicating them altogether. Contact a local pest control specialist.

Make sure that you address termite infestations immediately because they will quickly lead to severe damage. Don’t let these nasty insects eat you out of house and home! Address the problem as soon as you can.
