What are those creepy bugs hiding in the boxes in my attic?
- Chances are they are silverfish. Silverfish are tear-drop shaped insects that are brown-grey or blue-silver in color. These bugs adapt well to most climates but especially love being in dark, damp environments such as kitchens, basements, or bathrooms. Silverfish are very fond of eating paper and clothing, so it’s not surprising to find them in boxes stored in sheds, garages, or attics. They enjoy eating through book bindings, linen, silk, and various carbohydrates.
Can silverfish hurt me?
- Despite their menacing appearance, silverfish are not an immediate danger to humans. They do not bite, are not venomous, and do not carry any diseases. They can, however, infect food with their droppings so it is important to look out for that.
Why haven’t I noticed them before?
- Silverfish are nocturnal bugs that move very quickly and are also extremely secretive. For this reason, it is possible to have a large infestation of them without noticing for long periods of time. Be wary, though, the longer it takes to notice an infestation the worse it will become. Silverfish reproduce at rapid rates.
Can I spray for them myself?
- With good cleaning habits and keeping the humidity in your home to a minimum, it is plausible to prevent a silverfish infestation. If, however, the infestation has already occurred it is important to contact your local pest control immediately. Although there are some do-it-yourself and store-bought traps, most of them will only kill a few of the silverfish as opposed to eradicating the entire population.
