If you live in Florida, you’ve seen them: Big scurrying palmetto bugs. Maybe you’ve smelled the foul-smelling odor they release when they’re scared. These pests prefer to live outside, but every now and then they wander into our homes and take up residence. They like to live in warm, dark places, like under logs and in the shelter of palm leaves. Having a few of these guys in your yard is usually not a problem — they’re part of the Florida landscape. When you have big infestations in your yard, though, they can create problems — including higher likelihood of entering the home.
No one likes the shock of lifting a plate or a book and seeing a roach scurry out! To control palmetto bugs or other roaches in your home, your first line of defense is keeping a clean house. Cut off sources of food and water for roaches by removing crumbs and open food containers from the kitchen, and sealing off leaky areas in your plumbing. Mixing food with a non-toxic (to humans) roach poison, such as boric acid, and sprinkling along floorboards and countertops can help cut their numbers down as well.
If these methods aren’t doing enough, or if you just want some preventative care to make sure you don’t get an infestation in the first place, then it might be time to call a professional exterminator. We’ll treat around the perimeter of your home, around doors and windows, and any other likely entry point for pests.
