With Summer time finally upon us, there are some things around the home that need to be done. One of those things that many people neglect is pest control preparation. Did you know that you can defend your house against pests before they even arrive? Summer is an ideal time to do pest control prep, as many pests are out in full force. That said, below are some of our best tips for summer pest control prep to keep pests away.
Ants
To keep ants from infesting your home in summer, there are a few things you will need to do on a regular basis.
- Do dishes regularly.
- Put away any dog or cat food that is not eaten immediately.
- Sweep up any crumbs that may fall on the tables or floors.
- Repair any leaks or standing water in or around the house.
Taking these actions will remove any access ants have to the two main things they are looking for in your home: food and water. If those two things are not present, then ants will go elsewhere to look for them as they prepare for winter.
Mosquitoes
This is a popular one that many people are looking to get rid of. There are a few steps you can take to minimize the mosquito population in your area.
- Remove any standing water from your home, including in bird baths, poor drainage, in gutters, etc.
- Trim any overgrown plants
- Repair any tears or cracks in window and door screens
- Repair or replace sealant and weatherstripping around windows and doors
Remember that if you can see light coming in around windows or doors, bugs can get in there too. They do not need a large gap to make an entrance. If you have a pond or other body of water on or near your property, mosquitoes can use that water for reproducing. Consider adding some mosquito-eating fish to the pond to help reduce mosquito populations.
Roaches
There is a reason that many people are creeped out by these nasty-looking insects. But again, there are some things you can do to keep roaches at bay.
- Keep your trees and shrubs trimmed and free of overgrowth.
- Ensure that plants are trimmed at least 6 inches away from the side of the house.
- Treat and till the soil in garden beds often.
- Keep any mulch under three inches in depth.
