If you’re like many of our customers, you take pride in your lawn and landscaping. A healthy green lawn provides a place for the whole family to relax and play, and adds beauty to your home. A few too many of the wrong lawn pests, however, can wreak havoc on landscaping — killing grass, trees, and ornamentals. Here’s a short list of the big ones to watch out for.
- Chinch bugs — These small insects live in St. Augustine grass, a common grass species in Florida lawns. They feed on the sap from grasses, and slowly turn your lawn from green to brown.
- Mole crickets — These crickets feed on leaves and shoots, as well as root systems. True to their name, they tunnel below ground eating grass roots as they go. They slowly erode the root systems of infested lawns.
- Armyworms — These are a type of grub that feed on roots. Enough of them and your lawn will begin to suffer.
- White grubs — These grubs are the larvae of June Beetles. Like armyworms, they feed on roots.
- Sod web worms –These guys are another larval root-feeder. They look like fuzzy brown or grey caterpillars with dark spots. Like the other larvae, if you have sod web worms, you might notice brown or bare patches showing up in your lawn.
