Getting Rid of Spiders in Your Pool With Demand CS
The swimming pool is a place to relax and spend time with your friends and family, particularly in the summer months, and cool off – an oasis. However, your pool fence may not hold out all the unwanted extra guests that it may attract, including midges, mosquitoes, frogs, and especially those pesky spiders. Demand CS is what we recommend, but there are a few methods that do help.
In addition to being a nuisance, these eight-legged pests can also compromise your pool’s safety with what’s left behind when they drown within. Today we’ll be focusing on spiders, a sometimes-dangerous insect we all are apt to dislike that is typically troublesome to get rid of thanks to their tendency to make themselves at home wherever they can find a nook or cranny. What’s worse, they leave behind a mess of webs that leave behind a mess on your water’s surface.
Before you hire a professional exterminator, consider the pesticides beneath.
Why Pesticides Are So Effective
When dealing with insects, the first thing to keep in mind is how pesticides work. Most are designed to affect the nervous system of insects, causing paralysis and death. In order for them to work effectively, it’s important that they reach their target quickly and in large enough quantities.
Insects may ingest pesticides sprayed on plants by using their mouthparts to clean their legs and feet. Spiders, however, keep their bodies well above the surface and use specialized pedipalps (appendages near the mouth) that never touch the ground to clean themselves, which means they have a reduced risk of pesticide contamination. As you might assume, this isn’t the only reason why spiders are less likely to be poisoned by pesticides than insects. Another is their hard exoskeleton, which prevents them from absorbing chemicals through their skin like soft-bodied arthropods do.
Their bodies are not the only defense against pesticides that spiders possess. The secondary is that they often prefer and keep closely to their webs. This reduces the likelihood of them coming into contact with pesticides, which are usually sprayed on plants to kill insects. Unless you find the spiders yourself and directly spray them with a pesticide, you’re unlikely to kill many spiders at all.
So, what are a few ways of dealing with them that actually work?
Peppermint Oil Can Be Effective
One of the best ways to deal with pests is to make your pool (or general area) as unattractive as possible for them to settle in. Peppermint oil is a great, natural way to repel all sorts of pests – including spiders. Not just that, but kids and adults alike often enjoy the smell of it.
Mixing peppermint oil with water or water and vinegar in a small spray bottle and spraying it around your pool area keeps away several pests, like cockroaches and spiders, as well as mosquitoes, gnats, and horse flies.
Pool Area Repairs and Additions
Another tip for keeping spiders and other kinds of pests away from your pool is to get rid of access points – especially around your pool cage. Take a look around and keep an eye out for:
- Damaged screen panels that provide access points to spiders and other pests.
- Improperly sealed junctions between the aluminum edge of the pool cage and the housing. As the caulk dries, it can crack and leave gaps, so repair it with fresh caulk.
- Damaged weather stripped under the screen doors of the pool cage. As it ages, the stripping can become brittle and crack, giving pests a perfect gap.
Also, consider installing a threshold inside the screen doors of your pool cage. The threshold is a piece of extruded aluminum that attaches to the deck inside the screen door and gives it an even surface for the door to seal. This creates a flush surface behind the door itself so that the weather stripping works even more effectively.
