Now that fall season has officially started and the weather has cooled down, it’s time to throw the perfect backyard party. But when it comes to having a good time outdoors, having pesky bugs nearby can really put a damper on the party. Here are four tips to having an insect-free backyard party.
1. Maintenance matters. Keep the lawn mowed, as many bugs like ticks are attracted to tall grass, and fasten lids to garbage cans, which are especially attractive to insects such as wasps, bees, and flies. Doing this preventative maintenance will greatly reduce the amount of pests that try to crash your party.
2. Remove the water supply. Mosquitoes are attracted to stagnant water, which is where they lay their eggs. Make sure you remove all sources of standing water after it rains, such as pet bowls or bird baths, and regularly replace water in ponds or fountains.
3. The power of scent. There are many plants that actually repel insects because they emit scents that bugs don’t like, including geraniums, marigolds, lavender, lemongrass and rosemary. Consider planting some of these in your backyard, especially near areas where guests will be seated.
4. Cover up. Whether its a screened-in porch or an actual party tent, consider using something that will put a barrier between your guests and the bugs. You’ll also want to be sure to keep food in sealed containers and cover opened beverage cans and bottles.
