Step 1: Identify the Problem

Most Americans will only have to deal with two types of roaches – German cockroaches and American cockroaches. German cockroaches are light-brown with a pair of dark stripes down their sides. They are about an inch long.  American cockroaches are reddish-brown and measure about 1.5 inches. They love bathrooms, basements, and other warm, moist areas.

Not only are roaches gross, but they will taint your food and surfaces with diseases like E. coli and salmonella. Do not take this problem lightly or you might end up in the hospital! I’m going to show you how to get prevent roaches but if you have a serious infestation, then you might have to bring in a professional since they can pinpoint the issue and resolve it.

Step 2: Take Away Their Food Supply

Roaches must have food to survive so if you can cut off their supply, then they will be forced to find a new source. So they will stay away from your home. The problem is that it’s extremely difficult to remove all sources of food. Leaving dirty dishes in the sink or having crumbs scatter on the floor can feed these nasty insects.

You can dive even deeper by checking behind your appliances to make sure food has not been spilled over. Clean under furniture to ensure that crumbs have not made their way into hidden areas. For instance, cleaning behind the refrigerator is a step that most people miss and it’s probably serving as the most significant source of food for roaches.

Finally, invest in a garbage can with a tight-fitting lid and make sure you take it out regularly.

Step 3: Put out Bait

Once you have removed their food source, give them a new one – one that will start eradicating them! Baits are the best DIY option available but it will only work if you have eliminated their food source. I do not recommend you try straying insecticides. If you feel that spraying is needed, then hire a professional.

Spread bait around your home so that it reaches more roaches. Make sure that you get behind appliances and other harder to reach areas.

Finally, pay attention to the things you bring into your home. For example, a package that’s been sitting outside all day might contain some unwanted passengers. Used furniture could also contain roaches so it should be cleaned thoroughly before being brought inside.

Remember that prevention is the key to any infestation. You must take proactive steps to keep these critters out of your home. If you do not follow through with prevention, then no amount of professional help is going to rid you of an infestation.
