Gnats and fruit flies inside your home is a small problem, with a big impact. Try to prepare some food and see one of them land on your freshly made sandwich, and you’ll know what we mean.

So where do they come from? And what’s the best way to get rid of them? Well, there are a few tricks we can share that might help with the problem:

Make a trap

If you want to start trapping the little buggers inside your home, there are a few options:

Get the gnats or fruit flies drunk with a red wine trap

Pour a little red wine into a container and then set it near the source of the gnats. Place some clear plastic wrap around the top, and then poke a few gnat or fruit fly sized holes into the top. The bugs will crawl in, but they won’t be able to crawl out.

Lure and trap them with some bananas

Fruit flies love rotting fruit (hence the name), so try this idea out. Cut the top off of a soda bottle, . Place some bananas in the bottom of the open bottle, then flip the top part upside down and seal it to the rest of the bottle. Flies will go in for the fruit, but when they try to fly away, they wont be able to get out.

Use vinegar with some dish soap.

Just mix it together in a jar. The vinegar will attract the bugs, the dish soap will stick their little wings to their bodies.

But what if you want to make sure that the bugs can’t get in in the first place?

Start at the source.

The best plan for getting rid of gnats and fruit flies is to start at the source. Here are a few ideas to help with just that:

Pour bleach into the bathroom sink.

If gnats are breeding in your drainage system, pouring bleach down the sink can help get rid of them. Many times this is the case, as these types of bugs prefer dark, damp places.

Clear damp areas.

Like all bugs, gnats and fruit flies are attracted to moisture. Make sure you dont have any leaks in your house or kitchen, and if you find one, plug it up pronto.

Put a lid on it.

Trash cans are a notorious spot for flies to congregate. You can help eliminate this by taking the trash out often, and by keeping a lid on the trash can in your kitchen.

Do the dishes.

Once you finish with dinner, its sometimes just easier to leave the dirty dishes in the sink and take care of them later. The problem with that is, now you have an idea with damp, rotting food, and that is a perfect spot for bugs to hang out.

If you’ve tried all of these ideas and are still having issues, give us a call. We haven’t met the gnat or fruit fly yet that can beat the stuff that we throw at it.
