Everyone hates mosquitoes. Nothing makes it harder to enjoy a day on your porch, or a cookout on your patio, then winged vampires you have to constantly slap. While you can hide in your house, and spray yourself with insecticide every time you walk outside, it’s possible to take the fight to the mosquitoes. Sometimes all you have to do is alter the terrain to reduce their numbers, allowing you to enjoy your time outside in peace.

If you want to control the mosquito population near your home, here are three ways you can do it.

#1: Get Rid of Standing Water for Mosquito Control

Standing water is a requirement for mosquito breeding. It’s the reason you find a lot of them in the swamp, but none in the desert. So the first thing you need to do is get rid of any standing water you have on your property. That means tipping over those old flowerpots that collect rainwater, making sure you don’t spray the yard too often, and not leaving bags of soda cans and water bottles sitting out where mosquitoes could lay their eggs in them.

#2: Add Plants Mosquitoes Hate for Mosquito Control

There are certain plants that repel mosquitoes naturally, but which are relatively pleasant for humans. Lemon balm, for example, is a herb you can easily plant all around your property that both mosquitoes and fleas hate. Keeping it in boxes on your patio, and in your flower beds, sends a clear message to the bugs that this is a place to be avoided. Catnip and peppermint are also effective deterrents, as are marigolds and lavender.

#3: Lay Down Preventative Granules for Mosquito Control

Insect repellent granules can be purchased relatively cheaply, and mixed with lawn fertilizer. These granules are safe for kids and pets, and they can provide weeks of heavy-duty protection. When combined with preventative maintenance, and natural insect repelling plants, you have a layered security system that will keep your mosquito population to an absolute minimum.
