Mosquitoes can ruin your evening and even spread viruses, so controlling them is important. However, most of us would prefer to have a professional handling chemicals and poisons and would like to try natural, eco-friendly repellant options if possible. Here are a few ways you can defend yourself from mosquitos and protect the environment.

  1. Mix a natural insect repellant

The ingredients in mosquito repellents can be harmful to some people. To keep everyone safe, try this natural alternative that is eco-friendly and based on herbs, and in a simple recipe:

  • A four-ounce glass bottle
  • ounces of Witch hazel
  • 2 ounces of distilled water
  • Fifty drops mosquito repelling essential oils including lemongrass, geranium, lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus, cinnamon, citronella, basil, peppermint, or thyme

  1. Plant a mosquito-repelling garden

There are many different varieties of plants that are ideal for crafting lovely gardens and repelling mosquitoes. Putting these plants in your garden will reduce the chances of mosquitoes invading your space.

  • Marigolds

A marigold’s unique smell wards off mosquitoes while at the same time bringing color to its surroundings. Marigolds can also be ideal for vegetable gardens to deter insects that might attack your crop.

  • Lemon balm

Like citronella grass, lemon balm has the capacity to repel insects with its strong, pleasant smell.

  • Catnip

Catnip contains natural oil in its leaves, which is as effective as DEET when it comes to repelling mosquitoes. And it’s also a perennial that will make your garden a useful tool for controlling problem felines.

  1. Smoke versus the Mosquitoes

You may have heard of using smoke to get rid of mosquitoes at summer camps and campfires.

The way smoke can be utilized depends on the desired effect and the kind of fire you are building. You can make smoking more efficient by adding fuel with a bit of extra mosquito -repelling power like:

  • Citronella leaves

When burning, these leaves act like citronella candles, which are known to be an efficient way of keeping pesky mosquitoes at bay.

  • Sage

Adding a bushel of sage to the flames repels insects, and adds a pleasant aromatic scent that wards off animals as well.

  • Cedar Bark

Bark from cedar trees has a well-established reputation for repelling mosquitoes. Additionally, cedar logs burn well making them excellent fuel.
