Household pests are generally small, but few are smaller than a gnat.  The most troublesome aspect of such a small nuisance, is when you discover a gnat problem, there are too many to ignore. Also know as Midges or Blackflies, gnats are adept at infiltration. The gnat’s size allows it to easily traverse through the holes in screens, door jambs and are even pulled inside with the pressure exchange from the opening and closing of doors and windows.

The first glimpse of a gnat can literally be in your face. The Midges are attracted to carbon dioxide (exhaled breath) and make a habit of hovering around your nose and mouth. It is not unheard of for these miscreants to be unintentionally inhaled. Although their soft exoskeleton cannot stand up to contact with mucus membranes, it is an ugly image to fathom.

Some varieties of these invaders are also capable of biting. They feed off of warm-blooded creatures. The gnats are not robust enough to bite through clothing, but if they are in your home, they do not have to wait too long for some state of undress. Gnats also dwell in the soil of houseplants and moist areas. Being so small, they can nest almost anywhere and avoid detection.

The time to take control of a gnat situation is before they become a flourishing resident. If you see one gnat, chances are good that dozens are just out of your visual range. The only remedy for such an unwanted guest is eradication.
