Subterranean termites are prevalent in most of Florida with a high incidence of attack in urban areas. These termites are highly secretive as they enter your home or business through points of entry which include in-fill patios, fire heaths, expansion joints, and cracks in concrete slab flooring. After gaining access to an appropriate living condition, a central colony is set up from which they construct underground tunnels in a 100 meter radius – searching for cellulose timber food source. One third of all unprotected properties are vulnerable to attack by an invasion of subterranean termites. A colony of subterranean termites destroy more Florida homes than fire, flood, and storms combined. In 3 months time, subterranean termites can typically destroy the walls and roof frame of a home.

From a previous blog, let’s review some basic facts about subterranean termites:

  • Queen – After mating, the queen will produce 2,000 eggs per day and will live 25 years or more.
  • King – Lives and cares for the queen.
  • Workers – Do the most damage. They are hard at work 24 hours a day chewing up your home.
  • Soldiers – Protect the  colony from invaders. Soldiers have an orange colored head with mandibular pincers which are used to crush attackers. Ants and termites are mortal enemies. The presence of ants may be another overlooked sign that you need a termite inspection.
  • Swarmers – Can be viewed flying about or rather carried about by the wind during the early evening hours. They land, lose their wings, search out a mate, and begin a new colony. If a swarm of termites is seen, it is an excellent sign that a large colony is nearby.

If you discover a colony of termites…Do Not Attempt to move or disturb it yourself. Termites have acute survival instincts. If they are severely shaken or disturbed they will move to another location in your home or business where you won’t be able to find them. Let Brandon Pest Control assess the infestation and damage and we will put together an action plan to exterminate your termite problem.

Because termites constantly feed and groom each other, we may recommend a baiting system designed and formulated for termite control. Contact us today for a free inspection and quote.
