Dampwood termites thrive in warm, damp environments and have a voracious appetite for rotting wood.  In Central Florida, the conditions that accompanied the 2016 El Nino winter, warm temperatures and above average rain fall, will likely create a surge in these pests, as well as the potential of above-average damage.  Here are some tips to help you keep your home safe from infestation:

1.  Watch your mulch!  We know you’re itching to get out and garden, but be strategic.  Because it is wet, and made from wood, garden mulch is a primo place for termites to live.  Research has shown that dampwood termites have a preference in mulch flavor, too, preferring eucalyptus and utility mulch over pine-based product.  Eliminating mulch in gardens that abut your home, or if that’s not possible, keeping mulch at minimum 6 inches below the top of your foundation can help prevent infestation.

2.  Take a quick inventory your property to assure that no wood (firewood stacks, scrap lumber, old furniture, bags of garden mulch) are in contact with your home.  Stop storing firewood in your garage and clean up piles of standing garden waste.

3.  Prevent wet spots in your home’s exterior.  Address issues with your gutters, plumbing and landscaping that can create dampness in your living structures. Dampwood termites stage their invasion where wet wood meets the ground.

3.  With this year’s mild temperatures, existing termite colonies may not only grow larger but may also expand and colonize.  Since termite colonies can be hidden you may want to start this season with a professional termite inspection to insure you are pest-free and remain that way!
