Termites are one of those things we never think about until it’s too late. Because it may only be once you notice the hole in your wall, or your fence falls down, that you even know you have termites. Well, if you want to prevent them from sneaking in under your radar, it pays to be proactive. To make sure your home stays termite-free, try the following tips on for size.

Tip #1: Establish A Perimeter

Termites most often get into your home by proxy, so make sure you eliminate their typical jumping-off points. If you have a firewood pile, for instance, keep it away from your walls and foundation. If you have mulch, check it regularly, and try to keep it at least two feet away from your basement walls. The same goes for any bushes that might attract the wood-eating creatures.

Tip #2: Eliminate Their Food Sources

Wood siding is a common target of termites, and even siding that’s been treated isn’t immune. If you replace that siding with cement shingles, or a similar material, then there’s a much smaller chance termites will be attracted to your home. Also, if you do have wood, keep an eye out for water damage spots. These tend to be prime targets for termites.

Tip #3: Get Checked, and Install A Chemical Fence

If you want to prevent termites, the best thing to do is to bury a line of chemical protection that will make crossing onto your property quite risky to them. Experts will have to install the dispensers, and they will need to be refilled from time to time, but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure when it comes to keeping your home termite-free.
