We’ve all been there. Perhaps we accidentally left some produce out on the counter for a day or two longer than we should have, or maybe we threw something damp and rotting into the garbage and forgot to take it outside in a timely manner. Whatever the situation, everyone has had the displeasure of dealing with the nuisance of fruit flies in their home at least once. As annoying as they can be, it’s actually fairly simple to rid yourself of these pests without having to bring out the big guns, and more than likely you have all of the essentials readily available to you in your home presently.

  1. Clean Up: The first and most obvious course of action is to clean your home and remove any and all of the elements that contributed to the infestation in the first place. Take out all trash bags that may be lingering in the home, and make sure that all of the dishes are cleaned and out of the sink or off of your counters. Fruit flies enjoy damp places, so be sure that your home is free of any areas that are harboring excessive moisture.
  2. Set A Vinegar Trap: One of the easiest fruit fly elimination methods that doesn’t rely on lots of chemicals is setting a vinegar trap. Simply mix about two tablespoons of vinegar and a few drops of dish soap in a liter of water and place the traps in the locations that seem to have the biggest populations of flies. The vinegar will lure the flies to the traps, and the soap will ultimately kill them once inside.
  3. Catch Fruit Flies With Fruit: As amusing as it sounds, you can also deal with fruit flies by placing pieces of old, rotting fruit into a disposable container, covering the container with plastic wrap, and poking some holes into the wrap on top. Once the container is filled with flies, you may dispose of it and repeat as necessary.
