With at least 30 states reporting problems, it is no wonder that conversations about disease-carrying mosquitoes persist. The increasingly troublesome members of the family Culicidae have sickened both humans and animals for centuries. However, healthcare professionals were able to get a grip on the diseases’ respective cures until now. Recent outbreaks of Zika and Chikungunya have both proven that these buzzing pests are more formidable foes than scientists once thought.

Why the increase in strength? It’s primarily because there is no cure for either disease, at least not yet. Each one is typically carried by special species of mosquito, the Aedes aegypti. They boast unique coloration and mature wings that tend to exceed 2-mm in length. The blood-suckers also tend to have a seemingly insatiable appetite, which they’ll satisfy day or night. And accordingly to the CDC’s latest research, the creatures’ range is increasing.

A quick review of the government agency’s maps will reveal that roughly 3/4th of the nation’s landmass offers the mosquitoes an ideal environment for breeding. So what are most American’s doing about it? Many choose to combine expert assistance with some old-fashioned, DIY methods. For example, they’ll schedule pest control visits and hang mosquito netting around select areas of their homes. However, it’s vital to note all the mosquito netting and DIY methods will not stop the insects.

With that said, all successful efforts require persistent, professional intervention. Professional intervention typically starts with a review of the area’s mosquito population and which eradication efforts would likely work the best. Oftentimes, a chemical cocktail is needed to break the insect’s life cycle followed by a series of additional measures. Examples include reducing area moisture, vegetation and mammal activity for certain periods of time.
