Spring is right around the corner, and with the warmer days come another annoying pest: the roach. We normally associate roach season with the winter as roaches are eager to get out of the cold. However, spring and summer have their own roach infestation problems. As temperatures rise, many American cockroaches will stream into air-conditioned houses in search of relief from the heat. We have a few tactics to help you keep your homes roach-free this spring and summer.

  1. Keep your air-conditioning off when you’re not home: This is not only a huge money-saver and good for the environment, but it will prevent roaches in search of cooler temperatures. Be sure to keep the air-conditioning on when you’re home, though, because too much heat can cause roaches to fly, and this is surely something you’ll want to avoid.
  2. Maintain a clean home: Spring cleaning takes on a whole new meaning when it comes to ridding our homes of pests. You can avoid using toxic chemicals to get rid of roaches as long as you remember to wipe down your counters and keep dirty dishes out of the sink every evening.
  3. Seal holes: Now that it’s warm outside, having small holes might not bother you as much because the cold air isn’t coming in. Still, this is exactly how roaches get inside, so make sure to seal any holes in your home. Particularly focus on holes near pipes and mortar because the moisture from these can attract roaches.
  4. Keep your home dry: Spring moisture is a common cause of infestation in the warm months. Consider investing in a dehumidifier, and make sure to trim trees and plants in and around your home.
  5. Hire pest control: Pest control companies, such as Consolidated Pest Control, use tools that might be unavailable to you in your own home. Bringing in a pest control company at the start of the warm season is a great way to make sure your home stays roach-free.
