So, you finally managed to pick a weekend for that big bash you’re having. Everyone’s off work, maybe it’s a holiday, and everyone has said they’re going to be over. You’ve got the grill ready, your patio and deck are prepped, and everything is ready. It even seems like Mother Nature is going to cooperate, giving you some nice weather, and clear skies. But there is one thing you need to be cautious of… unwanted guests. The sort that show up unannounced, make everyone uncomfortable, and which can ruin even a great party while sucking you dry.

No, not your cousin Rudy that you unfriended on Facebook. Insects!

3 Tips To Help You Have an Insect-Free Backyard Party

Tip #1: Keep Your Verge Trimmed

Bugs love moving around in cover, and the shaggier your grass is, the more likely it will be to have bugs in it. So before you set up for the party, cut your grass, trim your bushes, and make sure there’s less cover for bugs. This won’t eliminate them entirely, but it will cut down the numbers you see pretty dramatically.

Tip #2: Set Up A Perimeter

While you can spray insect repellent on yourself, that can get unpleasant when there’s that many people swimming in Off. Instead, set up insect repellent devices. Make sure you have an electric bug zapper or two set up, for instance, and light torches and candles that put anti-insect scents into the air. This can add a little ambiance once the sun goes down, but it will also make sure your guests don’t get eaten alive.

Tip #3: Plant The Right Grasses

If you’ve had some time to prepare, consider changing the plants you keep around your party area. Rosemary, Citronella grass, and Marigolds all keep mosquitoes away, for instance. Depending on your local insect populations and problems, there will be other plants you can add into the mixture to provide natural protection that won’t leave a residue on your guests’ skins.
